In recent years, EAP researchers have explored disciplinary variation in academic writing, with many of these researchers taking a corpus-based approach to their investigations. In numerous studies, Ken Hyland, for example, has identified differences in how writers in disciplines such as Philosophy, Biology, Sociology and Applied Linguistics construct and communicate their research to their disciplinary communities.

What happens, however, when researchers communicate with others who are outside their disciplinary community? National and international bodies are keen to promote the potential for interdisciplinary research to find solutions to major problems faced in the real world, and there is much encouragement to talk across disciplinary fences. What are the features of such writing?

In the talk, I will review some of the findings of research into disciplinary variation and then report on a two year investigation into interdisciplinary research discourse conducted at the University of Birmingham, 2013-2015. In collaboration with the scientific publisher Elsevier, a corpus of almost 12,000 articles was built and analysed. I will focus here on the uses of metadiscourse, contrasting the uses in interdisciplinary writing with those in monodisciplinary journals. Through metadiscourse, writers interact with readers, organise their messages and construct their identities.


報告人簡介：
Dr Paul Thompson is Deputy Director of the Centre for Corpus Research at the University of Birmingham, UK. He has been a Co-Editor of the Journal of English for Academic Purposes since 2009.  He was part of the teams that developed the British Academic Written and Spoken English corpora (BAWE and BASE) and he recently headed an ESRC funded project investigating interdisciplinary research discourse.
